Feng Shui
Feng Shui literally means ‘wind water’. Daoism teaches that the land contains living forces of which we are all a part. Buildings are placed in accordance with the dynamics of mountain, hill and river, with graves, for example, placed high up on the mountain to accord them the best views. Current environmental projects with Daoists often involve Feng Shui principles.
Traditional Chinese medicine
Chinese medicine springs from Daoism, which teaches that the body is a microcosm for the universe. The different elements in the body must be kept in balance, as they must be in the greater world. Good health is believed to come from a balance of Yin (wet, dark,
negative, female) and Yang (dry, light, positive, male). Recently the Chinese Daoist Association announced that traditional medicines that were collected through suffering or endangering species (including tiger penises and bear gall) could not be used for healing, as they violated the Dao, or natural way of the world.
