‘Being kind to animals, saving them, and protecting them is not a matter of religion... It is something everyone should do.’ ~ The Dalai Lama

‘For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ ~ Matthew 25:35

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. ~ Genesis 3:19

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. ~ Job 12:7-8

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. ~ Proverbs 15:17

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. ~ Proverbs 25:25

There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. ~ Ecclesiastes 2:24

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body more than raiment? ~ Matthew 6:25

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. ~ Colossians 4:6

ISLAM

'Eat and drink, but waste not by excess: He loves not the excessive.' ~ Qu'ran (Surah 7.31)

JUDAISM

Once, while the sage, Honi, was walking along a road, he saw an old man planting a carob tree. Honi asked him: ‘How many years will it take for this tree to give forth its fruit?’ The man answered that it would require 70 years. Honi asked: ‘Are you so healthy a man that you expect to live that length of time and eat its fruit?’ The man answered: ‘I found a fruitful world because my ancestors planted it for me. So, too, will I plant for my children.’ ~ Babylonian Talmud, Ta’anit 23a

SIKHISM

Make love the farm, purity the water, truth and contentment the cows and bulls; humility the plow, consciousness the plowman, remembrance the preparation of the soil, and union with the Divine the planting time. (Sri Guru Granth Sahib, 955)

Whatever one plants in the farm of the body, that will appear before him in the end (Sri Guru Granth Sahib 1417).

SECULAR

As HRH the Prince of Wales said in a BBC interview in 2005: I think we’d be very foolish to expect that we can just import everything from somewhere else and imagine that that’s going to last for ever and ever and ever. It looks as though many of us are being very foolish indeed!

As Helen Browning, director of The Soil Association, said at the Faith In Food Workshop in London in April 2011: ‘We in the West are using far more than our fair share of resources to feed ourselves. We are taking from the plates of others.’
