"All faiths that cherish God the Creator must cherish His Creation and His image, the human person – and must arise and act in this crisis of the mind and the heart. We must remember the words of St John, beloved of our Lord, which we paraphrase. You cannot say you love God whom you have not seen, and despoil his Creation which you see every day." Ecumenical Patriarch, at the opening of 3iG in Istanbul. October 22 2003
The Green Patriarch

The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, head of the Orthodox church, is known as the Green Patriarch because of his outstanding commitment to the environment. Read his 2002 encyclical on the Environment.

Other Christian Networks and Initiatives

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has been concerned about climate change since the 1980s, when a group of women from the Pacific Islands petitioned the WCC to help save their homes, which were beginning to submerge. Link here for the WCC Globalization and Ecology pages.

The Earth: Our Creative Responsibility Group. This Quaker group was set up in July 2000 to provide a focus for the concern felt by Quakers about the state of our planet and our relationship with the natural world.

The Churches Together in Britain and Ireland have started an Eco-congregation. This is a network for Christians to make a positive response to environmental issues churches. Eco-congregation is engaging with environmental issues - from conservation projects in churchyards to recycling initiatives and from special services to community events.

The Christian Ecology website is a popular place to post information on Christian environmental events around the UK and elsewhere. Usually kept nicely up to date.

The Pope Urges Tourists to Think Green - and installs solar panels at the Vatican
Last Saturday the Pope returned to the theme of respect for God's creation in an address marking the UN's World Tourism day.
