East African Catholics publish new environmental 'toolkit'

‘This toolkit could not have come at a better time’
Catholic teachings on the environment linked with African spirituality and traditional beliefs on caring for Nature have been cleverly woven together in a new book entitled Stewardship Of God’s Creation.
The book, which was edited by Sister Dr Elizabeth Nduku at the Centre for Social Justice and Ethics at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) and published with support from ARC, is a teaching toolkit for catechists and seminarians. It examines issues around land, water, biodiversity, natural resources and energy.
Stewardship Of God’s Creation has been approved by the pastoral co-ordinators of the Association of Member of Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), the umbrella body for Catholics in the region covering Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
In his foreword, the Most Reverend Tarcisio Ziyaye, Archbishop of Lilongwe and Chancellor of CUEA, says: ‘This toolkit…could not have come at a better time. It speaks to the contemporary environmental issues facing AMECEA, offering African theological solutions. It is imperative that all people of goodwill in our continent, and in particular, in the AMECEA region, receive good information on matters of the environment. This toolkit will, therefore, play a critical role in integrating environmental protection and conservation into the formation programmes of catechists and seminarians.’
The book, which was launched in Nairobi in March 2014, has been endorsed by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops. A simplified version is being prepared by Father Charles Odira, who heads the Commission for Pastoral and Lay Apostolate at the KCCB, as a resource for Sunday schools.
