Board of Deputies of British Jews publishes new Fairtrade brochure

May 1, 2009:

The Board of Deputies of British Jews has produced a new guide to Fair Trade which ARC anticipates will be interesting and useful for people of all faiths.

"Tzedakah, the Hebrew word for charity, is central to Jewish values and prayers. The root of the word is Tzedek, meaning Justice and the Torah teaches "Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof" - Justice, Justice, Shall you Pursue."

The Board of Deputies of British Jews has produced A Jewish guide to Fairtrade, which outlines theological and moral reasons for buying Fair Trade goods - and in its analysis, background and human stories, we anticipate it will be interesting and useful for people of all faiths.

News of the landmark publication comes shortly after it was announced that Jewish communities around the world were embarking on the creation of an innovative, practical and thoughtful Seven Year Plan.

"Part of the magic of Fairtrade is that we are linked not just through buying and selling but because we share the same concerns - that an unequal world is an inherently unstable world - and believe in the same solutions that centre on putting people and the planet first," said executive director, Harriet Lamb.

Sheikh Sami attended ARC meetings in Turkey and Sweden to discuss investments and forestry, “and when I returned from Sweden I was convinced it was time for the Druze to create a sacred gift.”
