With Deep Sadness
September 25 2006:
It is with deep sadness that we announce that Jill Bowling, trustee for ARC, head of conservation for WWF-UK and friend to many of us here, died on Saturday, in a helicopter crash in Nepal where all 24 passengers and crew were killed.
Jill was one of the most thoughtful, active and supportive of trustees, and those of us who were lucky enough to know her better, loved her as a friend. This is a terrible personal loss for us here, as well as a deep professional loss for ARC, and WWF.
The helicopter was making a short flight to a local airport from a project where, after many years work, the Kanchenjunga conservation area (including the world's third highest mountain) was handed over to the local community to manage. It is not yet known what caused the crash.
Our prayers are with Jill's family and with the families of the 23 other men and women who died.
