ARC media partner UBrainTV has published a wide-ranging and thoughtful interview with James Kidner of the Coexist Foundation on the role of religion in today's 24-hour, globalised society.
The Coexist Foundation is an educational charity which works around the world to help people understand religion in the world today. Far from disappearing in the 21st century, as some assumed it would do, religion is growing, says Kidner, and Coexist's mission is to help people understand that it can be an asset, not just in people's individual lives but in wider society.
"When there is a crisis in society, who is it who rushes in to clear up the mess?" he asks. "It's not the police, it's the voluntary groups, the churches, Islamic Relief, World Jewish Relief - all these wonderful organisations that have been established out of faith communities to step in and pick up the pieces, help mend lives, help put some purpose back into people's existence."
Religions also have a huge role to play in protecting the environment, says Kidner: "Coexist has supported a whole range of projects over the years where we're trying to get people to address, through their own faith traditions and with other people's faith traditions, ways in which they can work together.

"Our proudest moment in this so far was the Windsor Celebration organised by the Alliance of Religions and Conservation just ahead of the Copenhagen Earth Summit in November 2009.
"And there we got representatives of different religions from all around the world to come together and look into their own traditions and see how they could frame a better, wiser, more measured approach to environmental stewardship. We got some wonderful stories and outcomes from that celebration and we look forward to doing more in the future."
