Call to Conscience text for Paris COP. Summit of Conscience 2015

Paris, July 21, Dear Sir, Madam,
From a meeting in Paris for a “Summit of Conscience for Climate”, initiated by Nicolas Hulot, the French President’s Special Envoy for the protection of the planet, we are taking this opportunity to speak to you, person to person.
By their nature, COPs offer an opportunity to meet and talk at the highest level. They also offer an opportunity to undertake decisive steps to tackle climate change; but as we all know that opportunity is beset by challenges.
2015 is a dramatic year for making key choices for Humanity: we need to reinvent how we tackle the major challenges that face us and our planet. This calls for new ways of living and acting.
Such a call comes from the deep belief by the signatories to this letter that to really make a difference each of us needs to approach these complex challenges from our own individual personal consciences.
This calls for real honesty at every level, and it is vital that it starts here, among those deeply involved at the level of leaders of national delegations, NGOs, the scientific community, civil society...
So as you prepare to come to Paris we would like to ask you to think about your personal role, and answer a simple, but profound, question: Why do I care?
Your response might be very personal – the influence of a parent, child or grandparent; the influence of culture or personal beliefs; the influence of a transformative experience of the wonder and beauty of nature; a crisis in your life which brought you back to core values.
In our contemporary world it is very rare that we are asked to talk about what lies at the heart of our actions. Instead we hide behind statistics, data, policy statements etc, few of which actually touch other people’s hearts and minds.
To create this letter, and to consolidate the movement behind asking this question, several public and private institutions hosted The Summit of Conscience, in Paris, July 2015. They invited thinkers, faith leaders, artists, cultural figures, thinkers and others to explore the idea of individual conscience as a way to finding a real solution to climate change and the destruction of the environment.
Many of the Summit attendees are signatories to this letter, and each has gone through the thoughtful, sometimes tough, often revealing process of trying to find an honest answer, rather than just an obvious one.
In telling the story of Why do I care, you will be joining millions around the world, including the example set recently by His Holiness The Pope, in making climate change and the protection of our beautiful planet a personal issue of our own beliefs and values.
Why are we asking you to do this? Because we hope that in answering this question, you will come to the Cop primarily as a conscious human being not just a representative of a Government or agency.
In the end the most important element of this is that we hear from you as a person, a member of the human family who has for a time a uniquely significant role to play in protecting the world.

Réunis à Paris pour un « Sommet des Consciences pour le Climat », organisé à l’initiative de Nicolas Hulot, Envoyé Spécial du Président de la République française pour la protection de la planète, nous souhaitons, par cette lettre, nous adresser à vous de personne à personne, de conscience à conscience.
Par nature, les Conférences sur le Climat permettent d’échanger au plus haut niveau. En cela, elles peuvent permettre de prendre des mesures décisives pour relever le défi climatique. Mais nous savons tous combien ces opportunités se perdent souvent dans la complexité des débats.
La discussion sur les Objectifs du Développement durable qui se tiendra en septembre à New York et les négociations climatiques à Paris en décembre font de 2015 une année capitale pour effectuer des choix essentiels pour l’Humanité.
Les signataires de cette lettre ont la conviction profonde que, pour faire la différence, chacun de nous se doit d’aborder ces défis complexes en s’interrogeant, en conscience sur les positions, les choix qu’il aura à défendre.
Alors que vous vous préparez à venir à Paris, nous souhaitons vous demander de réfléchir à votre rôle personnel, de vous interroger sur ce qui vous a conduit aux fonctions que vous occupez aujourd’hui, et, pour cela, de vous poser, en votre for intérieur, cette simple question : Why do I care ?
Votre réponse sera sans doute très intime. Dans notre monde contemporain, il est rare d’être invité à exprimer ce qui fonde nos choix et oriente nos actes. Nous justifions plus souvent nos décisions en avançant des arguments qui paraissent légitimes : statistiques, données, tous arguments qui parlent rarement au cœur et à l’esprit de nos semblables.
Pour rendre publique cette lettre, et inciter au questionnement individuel chacun d’entre nous, quel que soit son rôle, son investissement, sa mission au regard des négociations à venir, partenaires publics et privés ont organisé
« Le Sommet des Consciences pour le Climat » à Paris, le 21 Juillet 2015.
Nombre d’entre nous, intervenants au Sommet, sommes signataires de cette lettre. Chacun d’entre nous s’est livré à cet exercice exigeant d’introspection, consistant à apporter une réponse personnelle et honnête à la question Why do I care, plutôt que des arguments convenus et généraux.
Par votre réponse à « Why do I care », vous contribuerez, aux côtés de millions de personnes à travers le monde, comme récemment le Pape François, à faire du changement climatique et de la protection de notre planète, un enjeu qui concerne personnellement chacun dans ses croyances et ses valeurs.
Nous espérons qu’en répondant à cette question simple, vous aborderez la COP21 non pas simplement en tant que représentant d’un Gouvernement ou d’organisation mais aussi en tant qu’être humain animé par sa propre conscience,
Au terme de tout ceci, nous attendons de vous de recevoir le message d’une personne, d’une conscience, membre de la grande famille humaine, conscient d’avoir la responsabilité de devoir écrire l’Histoire pour ne pas avoir à la subir.
