Sikh pilgrim site
The shrine of Takhat Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib at Nanded is the place where Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji 10th Guru of Sikh religion breathed his last. Before he proceeded to heaven he declared that the holy book Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji should hereafter be the Guru for all Sikhs.
Approximately 5-6 million Sikh pilgrims visit Nanded every year, with especially large gatherings on Dussera, Deepawali, Holi, Guru ta Gaddi Divas, Baisakhi and the last week of December of every Year.
Since 2008 there has been an effort to green the courtyard of Takhat Sachkhand Sahib (shrine) and the surroundings of the local Gurudwara. Earlier this year a press conference took place involving the local authority, religious authorities and the EcoSikh organisation and committing to a major tree planting operation to save earth, save water and control pollution. The local District Collector has committed to planting 10 million trees by 2014.
There is felt to be good liaison between faith groups and both local and state government.
